Halloween Safety Tips

Trick-or-treaters urged to be cautious when out collecting candies

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to be safe, and the public is asked to be cautious of the little ones on Halloween.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP want people to be safe and have fun scares, while also being careful.

Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to be seen by carrying a flashlight, glowsticks, or wearing bright and reflective costumes; use sidewalks and crosswalks and never dart out from behind parked cars; make sure masks and accessories don’t block your vision; travel in groups and stay on familiar, well-lit streets; and save your candies until after you get home and a parent or guardian has inspected the goodies.

Parents and guardians were asked to go over safety rules with their children before going out for the night; map out a safe trick-or-treating route; accompany young children; check all candy before it’s eaten; and make sure costumes fit properly and won’t cause the kids to trip and fall.

Mounties also urged motorists to be cautious and on the look out for trick-or-treaters crossing the roads, especially in residential areas, and to be patient.

“Halloween should be full of fun and fright and not real fear,” Const. Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“A little extra care and caution will help make sure everyone’s night is spooky and scary in the right ways.”

Vernon Fire Rescue Services echoed the same messaging from the RCMP, asking people be cautious when out collecting candies or when driving through their neighbourhood.

VFRS added that fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited within city limits, and people found lighting those off in town could be fined up to $300. The fire department said Fire Prevention and Bylaw Enforcement will be out on Halloween to make sure people are complying with the law.
