Wildfire on Knox Moutain: One person arrested

UPDATE 4:58 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP confirmed early Friday evening that one individual has been arrested and remains in custody in relation to the fire that was sparked on Knox Mountain this afternoon.

Police said this was an ongoing investigation and no further information would be released at this time.

Police ask the public to continue to stay out of the area of Knox Mountain while crews battle the fire.

BC Wildfire Service told Vernon Matters that while there are resources available for local wildfires, non were requested of them by the Kelowna Fire Department.

There was a major response by local fire crews and RCMP to a fire burning on Knox Mountain in Kelowna, Friday afternoon.

It was spotted around 3:30 p.m., on the part of the mountain popular with hikers and cyclists.

Photos sent to Vernon Matters showed flames on the south face of the mountain, the part facing the north end of the city .

Wind gusts were prevailing Friday afternoon with Environment Canada forecasting those at around 45 kph from a south south westerly direction.

RCMP asked the public to stay away from Knox Mountain and had blocked off roads around the access points.

The Kelowna Fire Department were on scene and police were assisting hikers off the mountain.
