West Kelowna approves property tax exemptions for local churches, non-profits
West Kelowna council has approved a bylaw exempting a number of properties from taxation for 2026, including local churches, private schools and non-profit organizations.
The Property Tax Exemption Bylaw covers 14 places of worship, several non-profit organizations, and a handful of miscellaneous community properties. Some will receive a full exemption, while others are granted partial relief, ranging from 22 per cent to 90 per cent of assessed value.
Council said the move aims to support community organizations and reduce operating costs, allowing them to focus resources on programs and services for local residents. The bylaw also covers lands owned by public authorities and leased to community groups.
City staff said the exemptions are in line with the Community Charter, which allows municipalities to exempt properties for specific public, charitable or non-profit purposes.
