The renowned Italian-Canadian artist from Vernon has her work on display in Rome for the first time.

“Sveva Caetani’s life and art will be the subject of a large-scale feature exhibition opening this fall ar Rome’s MAXXI National Museum [of 21st Century Art],” the Caetani Centre said in a release.

“This will be the first time her work will be shown outside Canada, and the full Recapitulation series exhibited in its entirety.”

Caetani, who was born in Rome but left when she was a child, and the Caetani Cente said the artist had dreamed of having her work exhibited in her birthplace, but that was never realized before her death in 1994.

“The Caetani Centre has been working with MAXXI for nearly two years to bring Sveva’s Recapitulation series to Rome for her first posthumous international exhibition, and we are thrilled that it’s finally happening,” Laisha Rosnau, executive director of the Caetani Centre, said.

“Italy was central to Sveva’s family history and personal identity — reflected in her memories, writing, and artwork. Hosting her first international show in the country of her birth is a remarkable tribute to her legacy.”

The Caetani Centre worked with the MAXXI curator, who visited Vernon and examined the work on display at the heritage house in Vernon before approving the request to have the work exhibited at the museum.

The exhibition, titled Sveva Caetani: Forma e Frammento, opened October 3 at the MAXXI in Rome. It will be on display in her home city until January 4, 2026.
