Greater Vernon saw housing construction take a big dip in the latest reporting month.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were just nine housing projects started locally in September.

That was down significantly from the 53 starts in August, and also marked a decline from the 20 projects started in September of 2024.

CMHC said the projects started in the latest month involved five single and four semi-detached homes.

The agency said a total of 182 housing projects had been started in Greater Vernon as of the end of September, which was up from the 137 starts recorded in the same period the year before.

CMHC said Kelowna also saw 95 new projects started in September, bringing the year-to-date total up to 2,132 new housing projects. However, it said those were both down on an annual basis.

British Columbia also saw housing construction slow down in September.

CMHC said there were 2,922 housing projects started across the province in September, down from 3,461 starts recorded in the same month the year before.

A total of 31,761 new housing projects had been started in B.C. this year, which was down from the 32,253 starts in the same period the year before.

The country as a whole however did see housing construction increase.

CMHC said there were 22,375 housing starts across Canada in September, up from the 18,806 starts recorded in the same month the year before.

To date, a total of 178,035 housing projects had been started across Canada, up from the 168,442 starts recorded during the first nine months of 2024.
