Ban on open burning and campfires lifted for most of the Central Okanagan

Oct 20, 2025 | 12:15 PM

After weeks of restrictions, Central Okanagan residents can finally light campfires again.

The seasonal ban ended Monday, October 20, 2025, at noon following recent rainfall and cooler temperatures.

Campfires are allowed in fire protection areas in Ellison, Joe Rich, North Westside, Wilsons Landing, the City of West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation, the District of Lake Country and the District of Peachland. They remain prohibited in the City of Kelowna.

Residents must keep fires attended, have tools and water nearby, and fully extinguish the fire before leaving.

Open burning permits are now available for eligible property owners through local fire services. Burning is allowed when air quality and venting conditions are good, and all fires must be completed by April 30 or if conditions change.

Certain yard waste, including leaves, pine needles, grass clippings and weeds, cannot be burned and violators may face fines or be charged for fire suppression costs.
