West Kelowna shows off new fire hall

West Kelowna’s new $14.3 million Lakeview Heights fire hall is officially open – a milestone that has been more than a decade in the making.

During a formal unveiling Friday, Fire Chief Jason Brolund said the project really gained momentum after the 2023 wildfire season.

“This is a project that’s been talked about since I started as chief 11 years ago. Construction began in March of 2024, and crews moved in last week,” he said.

Brolund contrasted the new facility with the old hall.

“Somebody asked me why we had to move, and the reason is because that was a dump. It was built for a different era with volunteer firefighters who came when they were called. As the city and department grew, and we added full-time staff, it just became unusable for us,” he said.

Mayor Gord Milsom added, “This is a project the community can be proud of. It enhances safety for firefighters and residents, and the integration with community spaces makes it a hub for the Lakeview Heights area.”

The project includes modern fire bays, training areas, community space, and upgraded health and safety features, including underground power lines that allow safe ladder truck operations. Fire crews have spent the past week getting familiar with the new building, and Brolund said it is designed to serve West Kelowna for the next 100 years.

The project also incorporates the Lakeview Heights Community Hall, adjacent park, and recreational spaces including pickleball and sports courts, creating a combined facility for both firefighters and the wider community.

Brolund said small touches, like transferring the flag from the old hall on moving day, help preserve tradition while establishing a fresh chapter for local firefighters.
