RCMP have not confirmed whether they are investigating a possible connection between fireworks and a small fire along Westside Road early Thursday morning.

Vernon Matters obtained video from Kelowna resident Deena Johansen showing fireworks being launched from a vehicle about an hour before the blaze started.

“My footage is me travelling northbound while the other car was driving southbound,” Johansen said. “I did stop to make sure no fire had started,” she explained. “It wasn’t until an hour later that flames were [reported].

West Kelowna Fire and the B.C. Wildfire Service were called to the scene around 1 a.m., officials said. Fire Chief Jason Brolund said the blaze was well under one hectare and crews were able to contain it before it spread.

“Quick work from multiple fire departments saw this one knocked down quickly,” Brolund said.

The B.C. Wildfire Service confirmed that by Thursday morning, an initial attack crew of four remained on site to patrol the area and extinguish any lingering smoke. Officials said the fire was contained without causing significant damage and no injuries were reported.

Authorities are reminding residents to remain vigilant during dry conditions and to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
