A home in Vernon’s Turtle Mountain area was seriously damaged in a fire late Friday night.

Alan Hofsink, Deputy Fire Chief for Vernon Fire Rescue Services, said the fire department received a report of a fire at a home on Hawksbill Place around 10 p.m. Oct. 3.

“Crews arrived on scene to find the fire well seeded into the attic space and the roof,” Hofsink told Vernon Matters.

“Actioning the fire, they knocked down the fire and contained it to the roof, however extensive damage to the house did happen.”

The investigation remained underway Saturday but Hofsink said it appeared the fire started on the outside of the house, and was not criminal in nature.

The fire was also contained to just the one house.

“We had a couple cedar hedges along one side next to the neighbours on the right side, and [the house] on the left side is in pretty close quarters, but the neighbours actually had the garden houses out, which is good,” Hofsink said.

“Our recommendation is always to be FireSmart with your houses and remove those cedars because when they are fully involved they are like a torch.”

Two people and their two pets who lived in the house were being supported by Emergency Support Services as the home was considered uninhabitable following the fire.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
