Prescribed burn begins in Knox Mountain Park

An 11-hectare prescribed burn in Knox Mountain Park is underway.

Its being managed by the Kelowna Fire Department and the City of Kelowna Parks department, with support from BC Wildfire Service. The controlled fire is intended to reduce wildfire risk, clear excess vegetation, and restore natural habitats while protecting nearby homes and park infrastructure.

The burn is taking place primarily to the west of Magic Estates, with localized trail closures between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Safety is a top priority, with crews monitoring fire behavior, weather, and smoke throughout the operation.

Officials advise residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to stay indoors, limit outdoor activity, and monitor local air quality reports.

The project marks the first prescribed burn conducted by Kelowna Fire Department.
