UPDATED: Evacuation Alerts downgraded for Peachland properties

People who had to flee their homes due to the Munro Lake wildfire can now return home.

The Evacuation Orders were downgraded to Alerts Monday, Sept. 29, for the properties between 5440 and 5463 McDougal Road, from 5357 to 5495 Pierce Street, and from 5379 to 5436 Princeton Avenue.

The order remained in effect for the ZipZone Adventure Park, located at 5875 Brenda Mines Road.

“All previously issued Evacuation Alerts remain in place,” the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre said in an email.

“To determine if you are in the evacuation order or alert area, search your address in the detailed map at cordemergency.ca. Residents on Evacuation Alert should be prepared to leave their properties with short notice.”

The Emergency Operations Centre said the Munro Lake wildfire saw little rowth from Sunday, and thet the B.C. Wildfire Service planned on completing the controlled ignitions started over the weekend to build a stronger fire barrier. People may see increased smoke and fire activity while the burns are done.

As of the latest update, the B.C. Wildfire Service said the Munro Lake wildfire was 310 hectares in size and still considered Out of Control Monday.

The BCWS had assigned 84 firefighting personnel to battle the blaze on the ground, as well as three helicopters to attack it from the skies. Heavy equipment was also dispatched to help build fire guards and a structure protection unit was also responding to the scene to help protect structures and infrastructure.

UPDATE 6:45 p.m. Sunday

A planned ignition was undertaken Sunday by BC Wildfire Services to remove fuel between the edge of the Munro Lake wildfire near Peachland and established control lines.

The blaze was sill categorized as out of control.

One address was added to the Evacuation Orders still in place.

All Evacuation Alerts previously issued will remain in place overnight. To determine if you are in the evacuation order or alert area, search your address in the detailed map at cordemergency.ca. The Evacuation Order area does not include residential properties. Residents on Evacuation Alert should be prepared to leave their properties with short notice.

The BCWS said earlier in the day it planned a 54 hectare planned ignition to secure the southeast flank of the fire. This was done by hand ignitions.

The Munro Lake wildfire near Peachland remained out of control Sunday as crews were set to deliberately burn more of the surrounding area in an attempt to get on top of the battle.

All Evacuation Orders and Alerts remained in place as teams of firefighters worked to contain the 310 hectare blaze.

Although there was no growth overnight, the fire was still classified as out of control and Sunday, BC Wildfire Service was preparing to conduct a planned ignition to secure the southeast edge.

The fire, currently 310 hectares, may increase in size today due to the planned ignition of and the public can expect to see increased smoke and fire activity. BC Wildfire’s primary goal is to remove fuel between the fire’s edge and established control lines.

Planned ignitions must ensure the safety of personnel, the public, equipment and property.
