World-first cancer trial: Kelowna patients being enrolled

Sep 25, 2025 | 4:09 PM

Kelowna is now enrolling patients in a world-first clinical trial that could revolutionize how cancer is treated.

It could also shorten weeks of radiation into a single, highly precise session.

The SIMPLIFY trial, led from Prince George and funded by the BC Cancer Foundation, is testing whether one targeted dose of a special radiotherapy can effectively treat certain types of cancer, while reducing side effects and easing the treatment burden, especially for patients in the Interior.

In a media release, the BC Cancer Foundation said the trial is led by Dr. Rob Olson, radiation oncologist and Executive Medical Director at BC Cancer – Prince George, and is open at multiple BC Cancer centres, including right here in Kelowna.

Dr. Ben Mou, a radiation oncologist, is leading the efforts in this region.

Rob Goodland is the first patient in the area to be treated through SIMPLIFY after his colorectal cancer spread to his lungs. He saw Dr. Mou, and underwent five precise SABR sessions over five days – one for each lunch metastasis. Because of the treatment, he is back doing what he loves.
