Okanagan’s drought conditions persist heading into the fall
The Okanagan continued to experience drought conditions heading into the first week of autumn.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued drought rating of Level 3 for the Okanagan Thursday, Sept. 25. That marked the third straight week of the region receiving the designation indicating conditions are more dry than usual and poses a risk to ecosystems.
The rate held steady as Vernon recorded an average daytime high of 26.2°C over the previous seven days, while only recording 1.2 millimetres of rainfall. Kelowna had similar conditions with an average daytime high of 25.9°C and a total of 0.4 mm of precipitation over that period.
The River Forecast Centre said there were low streamflows recorded across most of the province, including in Salmon River and Bessette Creek, which remained below fish survival thresholds.
