Pool Drainage Tips

Pool owners reminded to take precautions when draining water

Sep 24, 2025 | 2:58 PM

The City of Vernon encourages people to protect waterways when draining their pools.

With fall temperatures approaching, the city reminded Vernon residents to take care when draining pools, hot tubs, spas and water features to ensure they are doing so responsibly and ensure local streams, lakes and storm water infrastructure are protected.

That includes:

  • Dechlorinate water prior to discharge
  • Drain onto a dry area
  • Discharge water at a low flow rate over a long period of time to ensure it does not flow off the property
  • Stop draining if it starts raining or the ground becomes saturated
  • Drain saltwater pool water on property and never into the storm water collection system
  • Never drain pool, hot tub, or spa water into local creeks or lakes

The city said following these protective measures could ensure that water is safely removed without harming the environment, causing flooding or drainage problems, or impact the health and beauty of local waterways and lakes.

Vernon residents with questions about draining their pools, hot tubs, spas or water features were encouraged to contact the City’s Operations Services at 250-549-6757.

Improper discharge of water could lead to a person fined up to $500 in Municipal Tickets and/or up to $50,000 for Bylaw Infractions.
