Local MLA slams govt. for ‘crushing’ small business

Local BC Conservative MLA Gavin Dew is slamming the government for a lack of confidence among small business.

The Kelowna-Mission MLA is highlighting a report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) noting B.C. remains bottom of the nation for small business confidence outlook.

“The warning signs are everywhere,” Dew said in a media release. “Nearly one in five employers is preparing layoffs, while only a handful are looking to hire. More than half of businesses say demand has dried up, and taxes, insurance, and rising wage costs are crushing them.”

In response, Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon said, in part, small business owners are friends and neighbours and B.C. offers one of the lowest small business tax rates in the country, while the government is reviewing the ease of doing business.
