UPDATE 11 a.m. Friday Sept. 19

The fire that sparked in the Adventure Bay area led to some residents being forced from their homes for a few hours.

The fire sparked in steep, grassy terrain in the Adventure Bay and Somerset Drive area around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. The fire quickly spread and burned an estimated 1.42 hectares of terrain.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) and B.C. Wildfire Service quickly responded to the fire, and brought in under control by 8:30 p.m.

During that period, an undisclosed number of residences were tactically evacuated, but the City of Vernon said the affected individuals were able to return to their homes after the fire was considered contained.

Firefighters remained on scene to monitor the situation overnight.

“A few small spot fires flared up during the night, but the fire stayed within the established perimeter,” the City of Vernon said in a release.

VFRS was dispatched to the site again Friday morning to continue mop-up efforts, target hot spots, and reinforce the perimeter line.

“Conditions remain stable, and the wildfire continues to be classified as Under Control,” the city said.

A large stump within the burned area was still producing smoke Friday morning and the city said it could continue to smoulder and smoke for several days, though noted it was not a concern as of time of publication.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday morning.

UPDATE: 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18

The fire in Vernon’s Adventure Bay area has been brought under control.

The City of Vernon said the perimeter of the fire was contained and not expected to spread beyond the boundaries after burning up the grassy, steep terrain Thursday afternoon and evening.

B.C. Wildfire Service assisted with fighting the blaze, but those resources were reportedly pulled off the fire Thursday evening.

The city said Vernon Fire Rescue Services would continue to oversee the scene with two firefighters nd equipment remaining on the scene overnight.

“Flare-ups are expected over the next few days, which is normal for a wildfire of this nature,” the city said.

“A wet line has been established around the fire, and crews are cold trailing the area — digging into the burned zone to extinguish hot spots.”

The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of the latest report.

Several properties were evacuated due to the fire in Vernon’s Adventure Bay area.

The city added that over 30 members of Vernon Fire Rescue Service were responding to the fire at it’s peak. Those firefighters were being assisted by B.C. Wildfire Service, including aerial resources and an Initial Attack crew, and the RCMP.

As of 6:30 p.m, there were still approximately 20 local firefighters assigned to the fire.

The city said further updates would be provided when more information was available, and asks people to be cautious in the area as first responders continue their work.
