Central Okanagan unveils new roadmap for farming future
The Central Okanagan is charting a new course for farming with the release of its updated Regional Agricultural Strategy – a 10-year plan to help local producers thrive despite growing pressure from climate change, population growth, and rising costs.
The Regional District said the plan lays out a regional approach to water security, housing for farmworkers, consistent policies, and stronger emergency preparedness, while weaving in Indigenous knowledge and innovative practices.
“The updated strategy provides a roadmap for supporting farmers and ensuring agriculture continues to feed our community, economy, and future,” said Mariah VanZerr, regional planning manager with the RDCO.
The strategy builds on the district’s original 2005 agricultural plan and was shaped by more than 270 survey responses and extensive consultation with farmers, residents, and community partners. Provincial ministries, the Agricultural Land Commission, and Interior Health have all endorsed the update, with officials pointing to its alignment with farmland protection, food security, and public health.
