A charity golf event helped raise thousands of dollars to support people affected by domestic and sexual violence in the North Okanagan.

The inaugural Archway Open Golf Tournament was held at the Vernon Golf and Country Club on September 6 and saw 116 golfers participate in a day of golf in support of the Archway Society for Domestic Peace.

The event raised $30,000, to be used to help fund the programs offered by Archway Society including safety at the Archway Transition House, support dog services, support for survivors at the Oak Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, advocacy through court proceedings, counselling, and other wrap-around services to help adults, children, and families affected by these crimes.

“[The Archway Golf Open] was a celebration of community, generosity, and hope—and it’s this collective effort that builds a stronger, safer future for everyone in the North Okanagan,” Sherry Demetrick, Co-Executive Director of Archway Society, said.

“Last year, more than 1,600 people were supported across our programs, and events like the Archway Open help ensure that survivors of domestic and sexual violence can access safety, counselling, and the support they need. The challenges survivors face are systemic, but we are here so no one has to face them alone.”

The charity event included a series of on-course challenges, including marshmallow chipping, oven mitt contests, and a chance to win a hole-in-one car. The Archway Society plans to host this event again in the future to bring people together and raise more funds for the local service provider.

“Seeing everyone come together on the course, laughing, cheering, and supporting such an important cause, was truly inspiring,” Jody Swartz, volunteer event organizer and golf committee member, said.

“It made all the hard work that went into planning so worth it. Every contribution – whether time, financial or spreading awareness – helps survivors access safety, support, and the opportunity to thrive.”
