Umbrellas at Lakeview Park well received despite late delivery

The temporary shade options at a local park were able to provide some relief to the public.

A City of Vernon staff report said umbrellas were set up at Lakeview Park August 20, and were left out for the remainder of the summer heat for people to gather under when visiting the park and Peanut Pool.

The umbrellas were set up under the direction of Vernon City Council, who called for some shade options after receiving input from the public earlier in the summer.

“It was great, people received them well, they were using them for shade,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters.

“The long term plan is to have significant trees added to that park and to Civic Memorial Park, and we’ll probably see that go in this fall at a more appropriate time for the planting of trees, as opposed to the centre of a hot summer.”

Though the umbrellas were only set up with less than two weeks before the end of August, the Mayor of Vernon said city staff was able to find a solution and “implement something that would work, and would work quickly.”

The city also plans to install a permanent shade structure at Lakeview Park at a future date, and the Mayor added the city now owns the umbrellas and can set them up at other locations as needed.
