Interior Health issues overdose alert after spike in unknown substance
Interior Health has issued an overdose alert after a recent increase in drug poisonings across several communities. The alert is in effect until Sept. 12.
Health officials say the overdoses are linked to an unknown substance circulating in the street supply. They warn the drug supply is unpredictable and mixing substances, including alcohol, can raise the risk of overdose.
Interior Health is urging people to carry naloxone and know how to use it, start with small amounts and wait before taking more, and avoid using alone. Residents are also encouraged to use overdose prevention sites where available.
Drug checking services can be found at drugchecking.ca, while support is available through local substance use services by calling 211 or visiting bc211.ca. Officials also recommend downloading the LifeGuard app, which can connect users to emergency help if an overdose occurs.
