UPDATE: Evacuation Orders downgraded as Lavington wildfire continues to burn

UPDATE:

The Evacuation Orders issued in response to the Noble Canyon wildfire have been downgraded.

The District of Coldstream downgraded the Orders on 15 properties near the wildfire burning up the hill near Lavington to Evacuation Alerts Sunday, Sept. 7.

The Evacuation Alerts issued for other surrounding properties remained in place Sunday.

As of the latest update from the B.C. Wildfire Service, the Nole Canyon wildfire was an estimated 7 hectares in size and “Rank 1 with pockets of [Rank] 2 behaviour, meaning a smoldering ground fire with some visible open flame, but a slow rate of spread.”

The BCWS was supporting local fire crews in fighting the blaze by providing 52 wildland firefighters, aerial resources, heavy equipment and structure protection personnel.

The fire was suspected of being caused by human activity.

UPDATE: Sun, Sept 7.

The Evacuation Order for 15 properties and Evacuation Alert for about 160 other addresses remained in effect, the District of Coldstream confirmed Sunday morning.

Meanwhile the BC Wildfire Service reported the size of the Noble Canyon fire at 67 hectares, which was relatively little growth since Saturday when it was at 60 hectares. The fire is still rated as Out of Control.

If you are on EVACUATION ORDER you can register yourself for Emergency Support Services online at https://ess.gov.bc.ca or you can call Red Cross at 1-888-800-6493 for support.

Meanwhile the district announced Saturday afternoon it had closed The Emergency Social Services Registration Centre located at the District of Coldstream Municipal Hall, 9901 Kalamalka Road..

UPDATE: Sat, Sept 6

The Regional District of North Okanagan has extended the Evacuation Alert.

The RDNO issued an alert for 5280, 4290, 4280, 4289, and 4850 Hwy 6, including Willems Mill, Saturday, Sept. 6.

The previously issued Evacuation Alerts and Orders, which can be seen below, remain in effect.

As of the latest update from the B.C. Wildfire Service, the fire was still estimated at 66 hectares in size, up from 50 hectares Saturday morning.

The fire was determined to be Rank 1, or a smouldering ground fire, and the BCWS had assigned 52 firefighters, aerial resources, structure protection personnel and heavy equipment to assist local fire crews in battling the blaze.

The District of Coldstream has extended its Emergency Support Services program as the Noble Creek wildfire continues to burn.

Coldstream said the Emergency Social Services registration centre at the District of Coldstream Municipal Hall had been extended to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept 6.

Evacuees can visit the reception centre at 9901 Kalamalka Road to register, or they can do so by visiting the ESS website or by calling Red Cross at 1-888-800-6493.

Evacuation Orders were issued for 15 properties Friday night, and over 100 others were put under and Evacuation Alert.

As of the latest update the wildfire was estimated at 50 hectares in size and considered Out of Control.

The B.C. Wildfire Service was assisting local fire crews in fighting the fire by providing crews on the ground Saturday morning, with aerial resources on standby and ready to be deployed if necessary.

The fire was suspected of being caused by human activity.

UPDATE:

The District of Coldstream said Saturday the Evacuation Order on 15 properties along Highway 6 and Noble Canyon Road remained in effect due to the wildfire burning outside Lavington.

Hundreds more properties in the immediate area were under Evacuation Alert.

The fire was most recently estimated at 50 hectares by the BC Wildfire Service.

The District said if residents are on EVACUATION ORDER they can register for Emergency Support Services online here at https://ess.gov.bc.ca or call Red Cross at 1-888-800-6493. They can also come to the Municipal Hall at 9901 Kalamalka Road for assistance and support.

The Municipal Hall was open throughout the night.

If you do not have family or friends to stay with and your home insurance does not cover you living expenses during evacuations, you may be eligible for support from the Provincial Government.

A new wildfire has sparked in the North Okanagan and crews have been deployed.

It was measured at 30 hectares and listed as Out of Control by BC Wildfire service.

The agency said a spot fire was reported off Noble Canyon Road, north east of Lavington, at approximately 4:08 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, and it quickly spread up the hill within 30 minutes.

The fire was initially measured at only 90 m² in size, however images taken from close to the scene showed the fire had spread.

BCWS told Vernon Matters crews and aerial resources had been deployed to the blaze. This included helicopters and air tankers. The BCWS also said it had dispatched crews to assist the local firefighters with the work on the ground.
