At least one person was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after the specialist RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed to an apartment building in Kelowna’s downtown.

Around six emergency response vehicles including an armoured unit, as well as several officers, were on scene at the intersection of Richter Street and Leon Avenue from around 5:30 p.m.

The area was cordoned off as police called for a person to come out from a 12th floor apartment with their hands up.

At one stage a specialist officer, who had taken a position on the same floor, fired several rounds of an unknown type into the wall of the suspect’s balcony, presumably in an attempt to draw the wanted person out.

Shortly afterwards police were seen taking a man in handcuffs away from the scene.

There was no immediate police statement following the incident.
