Local home construction saw a slow-down last month.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were 13 housing starts in Greater Vernon in July.

That was down from the 22 starts in June, and well below the 51 housing projects started in July of 2024.

The projects started int he most recent reporting month involved eight semi-detached homes, four row houses, and one single family home.

Even with the slowdown in July, there have been 120 housing projects started in Vernon so far this year. That’s up from the 105 starts recorded in the same period the year before.

Kelowna also saw a similar slow down in July. CMHC said there were 197 starts in the latest reporting month, which was down compared to the previous July. To date, 2,011 housing projects have been started in Kelowna, which is also down compared to the same period the year before.

Thiough local housing construction slowed in July, that wasn;t the case for the province or the nation.

CMHC said there were 4,563 housing starts in British Columbia in July, part of the 23,464 starts recorded across Canada. Those were both up from July of 2024 which saw 3,860 starts in B.C. and 22,610 starts across the country.

Though a surge in housing construction was seen in B.C. in the latest reporting month, there have still only been 25,021 starts across the province so far this year, down from the 26,147 starts recorded in the firsts even months of 2024.

However, Canada has seen an increase with 137,833 housing starts so far in 2025, compared to 132,861 in the same period the year before.
