Penticton RCMP warn public about QR code parking scam

Aug 7, 2025 | 8:47 AM

Mounties in Penticton are warning residents and tourists to be on alert after a scam involving QR codes was discovered near parking meters in the city.

According to RCMP, fraudsters have been placing fake QR code stickers on or near parking meters. When scanned, the codes redirect users to fraudulent websites that closely mimic legitimate parking payment systems.

Police say victims may not realize they’re on a fake site and could end up entering personal and financial information, including credit card numbers, which can then be stolen or used for further fraudulent activity.

The scam has been reported in Penticton and in other communities across Canada.

Authorities are reminding the public that most parking meters in Penticton do not require scanning a QR code to pay. Instead, people should use officially designated apps or payment terminals that are clearly marked and operated by the municipality.

RCMP say anyone who suspects they may have been targeted by the scam should report it to the local detachment and contact their financial institution immediately.

Mounties are working with the City of Penticton to identify and remove any fraudulent codes and urge the public to remain vigilant, especially during the busy summer tourist season.
