Kelowna RCMP urge vigilance as bicycle thefts spike citywide
RCMP are warning cyclists to take extra precautions as bicycle thefts surge across the city.
Police say thefts have spiked significantly over the past six months compared to the same time last year, with many incidents happening in broad daylight during the week. Thieves are targeting bikes in residential areas, parking lots, public parks and streets — especially those left unsecured or in low-visibility spots.
“Bicycle theft is a crime of opportunity,” said Cpl. Allison Konsmo, media relations officer with the Kelowna RCMP. “Thieves are often looking for quick access and minimal resistance.”
The RCMP recommends always locking your bike with a heavy-duty lock, parking in well-lit, high-traffic areas, and storing bikes indoors when possible. Cyclists are also encouraged to register with Project 529 and to record details like the bike’s serial number, make and model.
