A woman in Vernon is planning to travel in her retirement after winning $500,000 in the lottery.

Valerie Hoath won the Extra prize in the July 19 Lotto 6/49 draw.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC) said Hoath was grocery shopping when she scanned the ticket and learned of her win.

“I scanned it at the self-scanner. I thought the machine was lying,” Hoath told BCLC.

“I think I was in shock!”

The Vernon resident then shared the news with her kids, who “were in shock too and asked if I was kidding.”

Hoath recently retired, and is planning to use the money to make the most of her time.

“I’m thinking of going to Disneyland, Hawaii or Mexico,” Hoath said.

“I’m in shock. It feels unreal.”
