The human remains found in a house that burned down last week have been identified.

Emergency responders were called to the scene of the fire, located at the house on the corner of Kalview Drive and Whitestone Road in Coldstream, at around 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24.

After extinguishing the blaze firefighters entered the destroyed home for a preliminary search, during which suspected human remains were discovered.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP say the remains were identified and the victim’s family has been notified of the fatal incident.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation as of time of publication, though police say there is no indication of any criminality.

The B.C. Coroners Service and fire investigators are also investigating the circumstances around the blaze and the death.
