The B.C. Government has taken control of a North Okanagan property that was allegedly used for producing illicit substances.

In February, the RCMP raided a clandestine lab off of Reservoir Road in Spallumcheen and found evidence of illegal drug production.

Following the seizure, the B.C. Director of Civil Forfeiture filed a lawsuit, which was acted upon and saw the 21-hectare parcel of land, valued at $1.067 million, seized by the province.

In a release, the Township of Spallumcheen said that the owners and tenants of the property had previously engaged in other actions contrary to the municipal bylaws, including unauthorized construction, illegal tree removal, and the burning of prohibited chemicals.

“We take these matters very seriously,” said Spallumcheen Mayor Christine Fraser in response to the seizure of the property. “Our priority is to ensure that all properties within our jurisdiction comply with municipal regulations and contribute to the well-being of our community.”

The Township added that it remains committed to upholding community safety and environmental standards and will provide updates on the seizure when more information is available.
