Highs Around 37

Heat warning issued as mercury set to climb

Jul 28, 2025 | 12:42 PM

The temperatures are expected to climb above the seasonal averages this week, and heat warnings have been issued.

Environment Canada says the Okanagan, including Vernon and Kelowna, could see daytime temperatures reach around 35 to 37 degrees this week, with overnight lows around 18 degrees, as a ridge of high pressure rolls over the area Tuesday through Thursday.

“Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for: seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility,” Environment Canada said.

“Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space.”

People were also advised to watch for early signs of heat illness, such as fatigue, thirst, headaches, and unusually dark urine, stating these symptoms can “rapidly evolve into life-threatening emergencies.”

The weather agency urged people to take steps to stay cool, such as by limiting their exposure to the sun and heat, using air conditioners and fans, staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade or cool spaces when working outside, and visiting cooling centres or other air conditioned buildings during the hotter hours of the day.

People were also reminded to never leave children, susceptible people, or pets inside parked vehicles.

The forecast Monday, July 28, did show the weather becoming cooler and wetter by Friday.
