Vernon City Council has approved replacing some items in its vehicle fleet.

At the regular meeting Monday, June 14, council was presented an opportunity to replace a Bobcat, a loader, a pickup truck, and an SUV. The new items would cost a combined $620,000.

Council heard the items were nearing the end of their lifespan and usefulness, as most were around 20 years old, and that the costs to repair and maintain them were around the same as purchasing new ones. Council then voted unanimously in favour of purchasing the new items using funds from the Vehicle and Equipment Replacement Reserve.

Though spending money on new items, the city will try to recoup some of those costs.

“All four will go on the market,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters following the meeting.

“If anyone’s interested in a 19-year-old GMC 1500 pickup truck, they’ll be able to look online and see that the city is selling one. Same with the Bobcat, same with the loader, and same with an SUV that is definitely aged out.”
