Evacuation alert lifted for Whelan Creek wildfire, crews remain on the ground

The evacuation alert issued for properties in the Ellison area due to the Whelan Creek wildfire has been rescinded.

The Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre confirmed Wednesday that 113 addresses are no longer under alert. The change comes after steady progress by firefighting crews and improved conditions in the area.

The alert had been issued over the weekend after the fire triggered a temporary shutdown at Kelowna International Airport and prompted evacuation orders for seven properties, which have since been lifted.

The affected addresses included homes along Anderson Road, Booth Road, Dead Pine Drive, and several other roads in the Rockface area. The Emergency Operations Centre said it is now deactivating and scaling back operations, though emergency responders remain on standby as wildfire season continues across the province.

Residents are being reminded to stay prepared and take proactive steps to protect their homes and properties.

Simple FireSmart tasks such as removing dry leaves and pine needles, moving firewood piles at least 10 metres away from structures, and trimming dead branches can significantly reduce wildfire risk. The Emergency Operations Centre is encouraging residents to consider planting fire-resistant vegetation and maintaining a non-combustible zone around buildings.

The Whelan Creek wildfire was a reminder, officials said, that quick action and strong community coordination are key during wildfire season.

The Emergency Operations Centre extended its thanks to the BC Wildfire Service, neighbouring fire departments, the RCMP, and provincial agencies for their response and support. It also expressed appreciation for residents in the area who followed safety guidance during the event.
