Jul 8, 2025 | 12:32 PM

A collision that claimed the life of one person on the highway northwest of Vernon is under investigation.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP says officers and emergency personnel responded to a report of a serious crash on Highway 97 near Tonasket Road around 8:20 p.m. Monday, July 7.

The early investigation determined a Subaru passenger vehicle was travelling north on the highway outside Vernon when it crossed the centre line and into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a southbound Mercedes.

The driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, a 36-year-old Vernon man, was extracted from his vehicle and taken to hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

Highway 97 between Vernon and Falkland was closed for several hours to allow emergency personnel to safely complete the work and for the preliminary investigation to be done.

Police say the investigation into the collision remained ongoing.
