Long Shadows Conservation Covenant

Outdoor area near Lumby now protected

An 80 acre swath of land near Lumby is now protected from future disturbances.

The Nature Conservancy of North Okanagan Society (NCNO), the Regional District of North Okanagan, and the land owner have agreed to a conservation covenant to ensure the land remains undisturbed in the future.

The NCNO said the property, deemed the Long Shadows Conservation Covenant, has a unique mix of old growth forest, rain-fed streams and springs, and rocky outcrop ecosystems. It is a habitat for everything from moose to black bears, and from hawks to at-risk snakes. It is also undisturbed and has suitable growing conditions for rare plants that are of a conservation concern.

“It’s a very special property with regionally uncommon, natural characteristics making it an incredibly important ecosystem and connection point for wildlife moving towards the Monashees,” NCNO Director, Keenan Rudichuk, said.

“That land is legally protected now and forever.”

The NCNO added having the covenant on this land was also important to maintain the natural habitats for plants and animals as logging, agriculture and residential development have caused extensive changes to the local ecosystems.
