Okanagan stays hot and dry, two fires spark

Jul 3, 2025 | 10:27 AM

Fire officials are warning that hot, dry weather is expected to persist in the Okanagan for the next several days, with no rain in the immediate forecast.

The warning comes after two separate brush fires sparked in the region Wednesday night; one near Killiney Beach and another behind the Okanagan RV Park in West Kelowna. Both fires were brought under control thanks to quick action by local crews, but officials say the risk remains high.

Provincewide, nearly 90 wildfires are actively burning, and the B.C. Wildfire Service says roughly 75 per cent of them were started by lightning. While parts of northern B.C., ncluding the Fort Nelson area, are seeing some relief from rain and cooler temperatures, conditions in the Okanagan remain dry and fire-prone.

The Izman Creek fire north of Lytton continues to burn out of control at roughly 130 hectares, prompting evacuation orders and alerts. That blaze was discovered on Canada Day — almost exactly four years after a deadly fire destroyed much of the village and killed two people in 2021.

As of Thursday morning, the wildfire service says 36 per cent of the active fires are considered out of control, while 30 per cent are being held and 34 per cent are listed as under control.
