After a bit of a slow down in April, housing construction in Greater Vernon saw another increase in May.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported 21 housing project starts in May 2025.

That was up from eight recorded in April, and up from the 13 starts seen in May 2024.

CMHC said the housing projects started during the most recent reporting month included 12 apartments, six semi-detached homes, and three single homes.

To date, there have been 85 housing projects started in Greater Vernon. That was also up when compared to the 48 starts recorded locally in the first five months of 2024.

CMHC had limited data for Kelowna, which showed there were 412 housing starts in May and 1,152 for the year so far in the Central Okanagan city. Those were down when compared both to the previous May and the same period of 2024.

The projects started in Kelowna during the most recent reporting month included 342 apartments, 35 row houses, 33 single homes, and two semi-detached houses.

Meanwhile, the housing agency reported 3,020 housing starts in British Columbia and 23,745 in all of Canada in May of 2025.

B.C.’s monthly total was down from the previous May, which was recorded at 3,732, though the national total was up when compared to May of 2024’s total of 21,814 starts.

CMHC also noted B.C. had recorded 14,859 starts to date, down from 18,944 during the same period in 2024. Comparatively, Canada as a whole had seen 90,760 housing starts as of the end of May 2025, up from 89,742 in the first five months of 2024.
