UPDATE: Thunderstorm risks downgraded for North, Central Okanagan

Jun 12, 2025 | 2:22 PM

UPDATE 4 p.m.

The thunderstorm risks in the North and Central Okanagan have been downgraded.

Environment Canada issued Thunderstorm warnings earlier in the day, though those were both rescinded and replaced with Thunderstorm Watches shortly before 4 p.m.

The weather agency warns the storm could still bring lightning strikes, heavy rain, strong wind gust, or hail.

The Okanagan is expected to see severe thunderstorms rolling in Thursday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the North and Central Okanagan, stating “a cluster of severe thunderstorm” clouds were moving in to the regions.

The weather agency said the storms could produce lightning, strong gusting winds, heavy rain and large hail.

It stated “when thunder roars, go indoors,” and warned that lightning strikes can cause serious injury or death.

The B.C. Wildfire Service told Vernon Matters earlier in the day Thursday that lightning can spark wildfires, and advised people report any new fires by calling 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone, or by using the BCWS app, which also has the option for people to upload photos.
