Mobile home lives up to its name, breaks loose near Kelowna airport

Jun 11, 2025 | 11:17 AM

A house being transported on Highway 97 near Kelowna International Airport came loose from its trailer Wednesday morning, landing in the middle of the highway and causing major delays during the morning rush.

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Airport Way, one of the city’s busiest corridors, as commuters headed into Kelowna.

The prefabricated home blocked the right lane, forcing drivers into a single lane. Emergency crews quickly cleared the scene. No injuries were reported.

Officials are investigating how the load became unsecured, with mechanical failure, improper securing, or driver error all possible factors.

The sight of a full-size house in traffic sparked social media buzz. The structure appeared intact, though its destination and any damage remain unknown.

Transporting modular buildings requires permits and inspections. The Ministry of Transportation has not confirmed if all rules were followed.

Kelowna RCMP and commercial vehicle safety officers are assisting with the investigation.

Traffic backups stretched north past the university district and airport roads.
