BC Highway Patrol is stepping up efforts against impaired driving this summer.

From June 15 to Aug. 31, drivers will see more patrols and checkpoints, especially on long weekends.

Superintendent Mike Coyle emphasized the importance of sober driving in a recent news release.

“Summer vacations and road trips cannot include drugs and alcohol behind the wheel. Whether you’re heading to a music festival, a wine tour, or a family camping trip, plan ahead to drive sober and stay focused. Don’t start celebrating too early.”

According to ICBC, impaired driving claims an average of 61 lives each year in British Columbia.

“Impaired driving is completely preventable”, Coyle added. “Act responsibly behind the wheel. And if you do see a problem, including a suspected impaired driver, call police right away.
