UPDATE: Sundog Festival’s Amplified Sound to run to 10 p.m. afterall

UPDATE: Vernon’s annual arts and culture event will run as late as it has in previous years after councillors decided to stick with the established end time.

At the regular meeting Monday, June 9, Vernon City Council heard a staff recommendation to have the Amplified Sound concert end by 9 p.m. in order to accomodate residents around Civic Memorial Park, where the Sundog Festival will be held on September 19 and 20. However, councillors voted against that.

Councillor Akbal Mund stated Monday that there were only six residences directly adjacent to the park, and they are located near train tracks that generate a lot of sound so they should already be accustomed to noise.

Councillor Theresa Durning agreed with Mund, saying the Sundog Festival was already making concessions in moving from Polson Park, where it was previously held, due to the creek naturalization work.

Councillor Kelly Fehr noted there should be some outreach to the affected neighbours to notify them of the later-running concert.

Council voted unanimously in favour of changing the Amplified Sound end time to 10 p.m.

Original story:

The annual arts and culture celebration in Vernon will be held at a different park than in past years, and won’t run as late into the night.

A city staff report said the Sundog Festival of Arts and Culture would be held in Civic Memorial Park on September 19 and 20.

The festival had previously been held in Polson Park, but was being relocated due to ongoing construction related to the Polson Park Vernon Creek Naturalization project.

The festival organizers requested the city of permit the amplified sound portion of the event run until 10 p.m., which would align with the previous year’s schedule, but staff advised that the event not run quite that late.

“To balance the interests of the event organizers with the nearby residents, and as authorized in section 3(b)(i) of the Parks and Public Places Bylaw 5057, Administration is approving the amplified sound until 9 p.m.,” the report stated.

“This supports the festival’s goals while recognizing the more residential character of the area. The festival organizers are aware of this decision.”

The report will be presented to Vernon City Council as information at the regular meeting Monday, June 9.
