Work has begun to prepare for Phase 2 of the Polson Park Vernon Creek Naturalization project.

The project, which will enter into its final stage this summer, aims to enhance the ecological health of the creek and improve flood resilience in the downtown Vernon park and the broader community.

During the work, which was scheduled to be completed by November, will require the internal road south of the oval track and the adjacent parking lot to be closed to the public.

Early work will see a temporary bridge installed and the multi-use pathway diverted to accomodate park users.

Construction will go from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with a pause on July 1 to accomodate Canada Day celebrations.

The City of Vernon said the project will benefit the community with new creek crossings, improved and new multi-use pathways, ecological restoration to improve fish habitat, and flood mitigation work to manage seasonal water flows and address issues with high groundwater and water ponding.

A community celebration will be held at the park to mark the milestone for the project. The event from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, will feature live music and entertainment, family fun activities, food samples, and the Polson Artisan Night Market.
