18-year-old ‘MAP’ agent catches out local pub

An agent in his teens, working for the BC Liquor Control Branch, has helped catch a local pub for serving alcohol to a minor.

A decision published May 29, by the branch, fined Post Haus Pub in Rutland, $7,000 for an incident in December.

The teen agent, who was 18 years old, was served a beer without being asked for ID. The Minors as Agents Program (“MAP”) has been used in B.C. since 2011 and licensees are notified about its use.

In its findings The Branch detailed how the operation went down.

An inspector inside the premises observed as the minor agent took a seat at a table inside the facility. A server spoke with the minor agent and then went to the bar and returned to the table with a bottle of Budweiser beer. The server placed the beer in front of the minor agent and then walked away.

As part of the published ruling The Branch submitted that on evidence of the licensee, their servers got “little training at the start of their employment.”

Since the incident, the pub has improved training for staff including the use of a secret shopper to test staff practices.
