False alarm

Kelowna RCMP end search, no evidence of anyone in Mission Creek

May 30, 2025 | 11:13 AM

After a dramatic and extensive search, Kelowna RCMP have confirmed that no one plunged into the swift waters of Mission Creek on Wednesday night.

In a press release, the RCMP said the incident began after a report of a female jumping into the creek. It was later determined that two athletic youths were running competitively along the Mission Creek Greenway near the reported location.

“The father of the two youths contacted police to confirm his daughters, who matched the initial description, had jumped off a bridge onto the trail below to continue their run and are safe at home,” the release said.

The RCMP thanked the two witnesses who made the initial report and the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) for their efforts in searching the creek over the past two days.

Police deployed multiple resources during the search, including foot patrols, police boats, a drone and the RCMP helicopter, which flew both during the day and at night.

The RCMP also reminded the public to exercise caution when enjoying outdoor areas near waterways, especially during spring runoff when water levels and currents can be dangerously high.

“With the spring runoff continuing, water levels are very high and the currents are strong, making creeks and rivers very dangerous at this time of year,” the release said.

No injuries have been reported. The investigation into the incident is now closed.
