High Streamflow Advisories issued in the Southern Interior, but not the Okanagan

Advisories have been issued for river levels and flows across the Southern Interior.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre issued High Streamflow Advisories for the West Kootenay, North Thompson, Upper Columbia, and Upper Fraser basins Friday, May 30.

An advisory was not issued for the Okanagan.

The River Forecast Centre said the advisories were issued as “rivers across the region have risen sharply over the past few days due to warmer temperatures and increased snowmelt runoff” after a ridge of high-pressure system brought warm temperatures and elevated snowmelt across the region earlier in the week.”

High Streamflow Advisories are issued when river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly. It does not indicate a risk of major flooding events, though warns it could cause some minor flooding in low-lying areas.

The provincial agency reminds people that fast-flowing bodies of water increase public safety risks and advised people be cautious around river banks.
