SD22 warns of possible child luring attempt

May 29, 2025 | 6:05 PM

The Greater Vernon school district is warning parents about a possible child luring attempt.

In a letter provided to Vernon Matters, School District 22 (SD22) said a student was walking near the Pottery Road area of Vernon around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, when a white van stopped on the road next to them.

“The male driver motioned for the student to approach their vehicle using a hand gesture,” the letter explained.

“The youth walked away and reported the interaction to their parent who contacted police.”

The letter also included a police statement:

“We are still conducting our investigation and, based on the information we have at this time, there is nothing to indicate any criminality is involved,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, reportedly said.

“The student did the right thing by not approaching the person, moving to a safe place, and reporting it to an adult. The importance of having conversations with your children about stranger safety cannot be overstated, and these conversations need to be regular. Talking through it in advance will help give them confidence and better prepare them to make good decisions should they find themselves in an unsafe situation.”

SD22 added that, with summer break on the way, this incident serves as a reminder to be street smart. It also recommended people reach out directly to their schools and principals with any questions or concerns.

The RCMP has additional safety tips and information available online.
