Emergency crews respond to report of person in water at Mission Creek

May 29, 2025 | 9:24 AM

A coordinated search was launched Wednesday evening at the mouth of Mission Creek following a report of a possible person in the water.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) was called in to assist Kelowna RCMP, the Kelowna Fire Department, and other emergency agencies after witnesses reported seeing a young woman on the Casorso and Swamp Road bridge around 5:10 p.m. She was described as wearing a dark blue shirt and dark shorts. It remains unconfirmed whether she entered the water, but some reports indicated she may have jumped and did not resurface.

Search crews responded quickly, staging at Truswell Park, along the creek banks, and at the Lakeshore Road bridge. Rescue boats were launched into Okanagan Lake, and an RCMP helicopter assisted from the air.

Operations were paused around 9:30 p.m. due to darkness and safety concerns, as the swollen creek—rushing with spring runoff—posed additional hazards.

Officials are urging the person reported—if safe—to come forward as soon as possible.

“If this was you and you are safe, please contact the Kelowna RCMP immediately at 250-762-3300,” COSAR said in a statement. “Your call will help ensure resources are not unnecessarily deployed and that responders can stand down safely.”

Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is also encouraged to contact police.

Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation throughout the evening response. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
