The person that led the charge on an activity that has grown to become an annual fundraiser in support of mental health programs will participate in the local event.

The Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) said Michael Schratter, founder of Ride Don’t Hide, will take part in the event at Creekside Park in Coldstream on June 8.

“I’m coming back to my hometown and I’m excited to take part in Ride Don’t Hide,” Schratter said.

“I hope to see you there.”

Schratter, who lives with bipolar disorder, undertook a solo cycling journey in August of 2010 to challenge the stigma surrounding mental illness. That trip took him across six continents, through 33 countries, and covered more than 44,000 kilometres.

His trip, which he dubbed Ride Don’t Hide, raised $100,000 for the CMHA BC division and helped open the world to discussions about mental health.

Schratter’s ride became the foundation for the national movement in 2012, which has since grown to include numerous communities and thousands of participants, including the local event.

“We are honoured that Michael will join us for the local Ride Don’t Hide, especially because Vernon is his hometown,” Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon’s executive director, said.

“He is truly an inspiration and his message of resilience and hope resonates with so many people.”

CMHA Vernon’s Ride Don’t Hide event will raise funds for the Youth Integrated Services Hub, which provides wellness programs, counselling, peer support, and other resources for area youth. Money raised from the ride will be matched by the Galbraith Family Foundation.

The rides for the local event will range from 2.6 to 32 kilometres, and people interested in supporting the initiative can register or donate online here.
