Former I.H. top doctor loses licence permanently

May 22, 2025 | 11:40 AM

Former Interior Health chief medical officer Dr. Albert de Villiers has lost his licence after being convicted of child sexual abuse in Alberta.

He was sentenced last year to five and a half years in prison.

De Villiers worked in Kelowna from 2020 until charges were laid in 2021 and was on paid leave before being dismissed after his conviction.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC) said he voluntarily resigned his licence in 2023 and agreed never to practice medicine again.

In a public notification on their website issued May 20, 2025, the CPSBC said the Inquiry Committee and Dr. De Villiers have agreed to resolve all matters arising from the investigation effective May 2, 2025.

The notification reads, in part: The Inquiry Committee concluded that Dr. De Villiers’s conduct was egregious and determined that his irrevocable commitment to resign as a registrant of CPSBC and to never reapply for registration in British Columbia or any other jurisdictions was appropriate in the circumstances
