Coldstream to explore establishing dog park at Pumphouse Beach

May 20, 2025 | 1:47 PM

A new dog-friendly park could be established in Coldstream.

The district will receive a report recommending establishing a dog park at Pumphouse Beach on a one-year pilot at the Long Range Planning Committee meeting Tuesday, May 20.

The plan said residents had been asking for a dog beach at Pumphouse for several years, and with increasingly hot summers and a need for a space for dogs to cool off the beach west of Kalamalka Beach was identified as a suitable location.

“Pumphouse Beach is a relatively secluded site, located down a driveway and not visible from the road,” the report stated.

“It is bounded by the regional water intake station on the east and a heavily treed area on the west. The site is owned by the District of Coldstream.”

The report said establishing the park would require the installation of a bear-proof garbage bin and one dog bag dispenser, at an estimated cost of $2,600; installing additional signage, at an estimated cost of $400; and enhanced maintenance, at a cost of $300 per month.

It was recommended that community engagement be done, as well as review bylaws and collaborate with the Regional District of North Okanagan, to establish the dog beach on a one-year term.

If approved, the District of Coldstream could have the dog beach ready for use by the second week of June 2025.

The dog beach was also an element identified in the draft North Kalamalka Neighbourhood Plan.

The report will be presented to the committee, and if approved will be brought before Coldstream Council for further discussion.
