UPDATE: Classes resumed as police investigate Seaton Secondary threat

RCMP have opened an investigation into a threat that lead to a Vernon High School being evacuated.

Police received a report of a threat made against W. L. Seaton Secondary around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15.

The building was evacuated and police conducted an initial investigation, where it was determined that there was no credible threat to the safety of the school.

“Our top priority is the safety and security of our schools,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“We understand situations like this can cause concern and recognize the impact they have on the overall feeling of safety in our community. These types of are taken very seriously and we are continuing to investigate the matter.”

Classes resumed Friday, and police said the matter was remained under investigation.

The RCMP said this incident was not linked to a threat made to A. L. Fortune Secondary in Enderby earlier in the week.

A high school in Vernon was evacuated due to a potential safety concern Thursday.

A letter from W.L Seaton, shared to Vernon Matters, said the school was evacuated after receiving “notification of a potential safety concern.”

The RCMP and school district were reportedly “collaborating closely to manage the situation and maintain a safe environment for everyone during the evacuation.”

The school did not indicate what the threat entailed, saying only the RCMP was investigating.

The RCMP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The school’s 75th year celebration scheduled for Thursday evening was postponed, although the school was expected to reopen Friday.
