Effective 15 year sentence for man who killed Harmandeep Kaur at UBCO campus

Sentencing has been handed down in the case involving the brutal death of a UBCO Okanagan security officer, Harmandeep Kaur, back in Feb. 2022.

On Tuesday, May 13, Dante Ognibene-Hebbourn entered a guilty plea to manslaughter in Kelowna court .

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 10 years and three months jail, after the court took into account the lengthy pre-sentence custody. The effective sentence was 15 years.

The court also imposed a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order.

The Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement Wednesday, the court took into account 1,705 days (approximately 4 years and 9 months) of pre-sentence custody.

Ognibene-Hebbourn had initially been charged with murder.

Harmandeep Kaur, 24, was assaulted in one of the buildings on the campus on Feb. 26, 2022, and later died of her injuries.

Ognibene-Hebbourn, who was working at the university as a janitor, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

Kaur had only recently become a permanent resident of Canada before she was attacked.
